Aisha bint al-Jayyar al-Sabtiyyah

Aisha bint al-Jayyar al-Sabtiyyah عائشة بنت الجيار السبتية

Aisha Bint al-Jayyar is described as a brilliant female physician. She was the daughter of the sheikh and author Abi Abd Allah Ben al-Jayyar of Ceuta – the fact that historians only remember the father of the people mentioned unfortunately shows the patriarchal spirit of social structures. In any case, Aisha Bint al-Jayyar studied medicine with her famous father-in-law Abi Abd Allah Ach-charissi. As she excelled in the field, she enjoyed a high status within Ceuta during the 15th century . The author of Boulghat al-Oumnia reports that she had a great knowledge of medicine and medications, just as she had the ability to “see” in water, that is to say either the ability to analyze urine or to study the water of a given region and deduce the diseases that this water could carry. Thanks to this knowledge, Aisha Bint al-Jayyar was loved by the princes and ruling elites, so much so that they showered her with generous gifts and donations.

Aisha Bint al-Jayyar died when she was around 70 years old.
