Three great empires, the Ottomans, Safavids and Mughals, together with Muslim states from Aceh to Timbuktu, produced some of the world's greatest architecture: Sinan's mosques, Isfahan's royal square and the Taj Mahal. Piri Reis mapped the Americas, and Taqi al-Din ran an observatory in Istanbul.
This was also an age of remarkable women rulers and patrons, of Persian, Turkish and Urdu poetry, and of scholarship in South Asia that reached from Shah Waliullah's Delhi to the Sufi poets of Sindh and Punjab.
