al-Zahrawi الزهراوي

Al-Zahrawi is considered as one of the greatest surgeons of the Middle Ages.

Full Name: Abū al-Qāsim Khalaf ibn al-‘Abbās al-Zahrāwī al-Ansari .

Arabic: أبو القاسم خلف بن العباس الزهراوي

Other Names: Albucasis or Abulcasis

Born: 936 AD.

Died: 1013 AD.

Origin: Medina Azahara, al-Andalus (near present-day Córdoba, Spain).

Famous for: Physician Surgeon and Chemist.

Contributions: 

Al-Zahrawi’s principal work is the Kitab al-Tasrif, a thirty-volume encyclopedia of medical practices.

He pioneered the use of catgut for internal stitches.

Al-Zahrawi’s developed a number of surgical procedures and instruments.

He was the first physician to identify the hereditary nature of haemophilia and describe an abdominal pregnancy.

He also developed surgical devices for Caesarean sections and cataract surgeries.

He has also been described by some as the first ever plastic surgeon.

Legacy:

The street in Córdoba where he lived is named in his honor as “Calle Albucasis”. On this street he lived in house no. 6, which is preserved today by the Spanish Tourist Board with a bronze plaque (awarded in January 1977) which reads: “This was the house where Al-Zahrawi lived.”
