Abu Zayd al-Balkhi ابو زید احمد بن سهل بلخی

Al-Balkhi is believed to have been the first to diagnose that mental illness can have psychological and physiological causes.

Full Name: Abu Zayd Ahmed ibn Sahl Balkhi .

Arabic: ابو زید احمد بن سهل بلخی

Born: 850 AD.

Died: 934 AD.

Origin: Shamistiyan, Balkh, Khorasan (modern day northern Afghanistan).

Famous for: Geographer, Mathematician, Physician, Psychologist and Scientist.

Contributions: 

One of the first Islamic encyclopedia of medicine titled Firdaws al-Hikmah

Legacy:

He founded the “Balkhī school” of terrestrial mapping in Baghdad.

Al-Balkhi is believed to have been the first to diagnose that mental illness can have psychological and physiological causes.

He was the first to suggest four types of emotional disorders: fear and anxiety; anger and aggression; sadness and depression; and obsessions.
