Ibn al-Shatir ابن الشاطر

Full Name: Abu al-Ḥasan Alāʾ al‐Dīn bin Alī bin Ibrāhīm bin Muhammad bin al-Matam al-Ansari.

Other Names: Ibn al-Shatir or Ibn ash-Shatir.

Arabic: ابن الشاطر

Born: 1304AD.

Died: 1375 AD.

Origin: Damascus, Syria.

Famous for: Astronomer, Mathematician, and Engineer.

Contributions: 

Constructed a sundial for minaret of Umayyad Mosque in Damascus in 1371/72.

Ibn al-Shatir also invented a timekeeping device called “Sandūq al‐Yawāqīt li maʿrifat al-Mawāqīt” (jewel box), which incorporates both a universal sundial and a magnetic compass.
